The name Lautēm is originated from the latin word Lautē which means "a constant search for excellence", thus serving as a symbolic merit held by designers Elena García Silva and Roberto Vercellotti to make sure that the brand lives up to its name. In recent moments, Kufed was gladdened to have reached out to Lautēm—now a staple brand in women bag’s category on our platform—and have them talk with us for a session of Q&A. Read further into the interview below to get more acquainted with this brand personality.
First of all, what fueled you to launch Lautēm?
Lautēm is a familiar project. We simply thought it was the right moment to start something that was ours, but this didn’t come until Elena had the opportunity to pass some time in a workshop producing leather bags. She fell in love with the skill of the people working there and got the inspiration to create a design that highlights the ability and the art of those people.
How did you get interested becoming an accessories designer? Why bags?
Elena has been always interested in fashion and especially in bags and shoes.
As an architect, what challenges do you find yourself in the fashion industry?
The challenges are not really in the design process, architecture is a design discipline, one of the most complete, and as Massimo Vignelli said: "If you design one thing, you can design everything".
Can you tell us someone in the fashion industry that inspires you?
All the most famous designers leave a mark, difficult to say only few.
With other modern bag labels, why should someone buy Lautēm? what truly defines your design?
Lautēm bags have a strong personality. I don’t think they are for everyone. They have a minimum design, yet through few details, their volume and their proportions are completely different from most part of the offer in terms of bags.
Have you ever considered creating other fashion items, like shoe or any other accessories?
Yes, of course, but it is not the moment yet.
How would you define the ideal Lautēm women?
There is no ideal woman for Lautēm, I design mainly for me. When I first designed Structurae collection it was not meant to become commercial. It was an exercise for my creative pleasure. I sewed personally my first “My Funny Valentine” with some help from the artisans. Now that everyone can buy my creations, it surprises me how different kind of people get interested in them.
What’s your favorite piece from your archive?
Difficult to say… My Funny Valentine has been the first one and I think that Night and Day is also a great exercise of design.
What fashion accessory you could not live without?
Bags and shoes.
Are you working on any special new projects? Like a collaboration in the near future? If you do, with whom would it be?
We are working on a new collection that will be different from Structurae and we have other projects in the pipeline, but still should remain top secret.
